BASICS

DESCRIPTION

Loss of epithelium from the corneal surface of one or both eyes. Often associated with trachoma, staphylococcus blepharitis, conjunctivitis, or a respiratory tract infection.

  • Characteristics - symptoms include photophobia, pain, lacrimation, diminished vision, conjunctival injection
CAUSES
ultraviolet light exposure, bacterial infection, viral infection

TREATMENT

TREATMENT METHOD
  • Topical antibiotics after positive culture
  • For gram-positive organisms: 10–30% sulfacetamide drops every 2 hours and 0.5% erythromycin or 500 u/g bacitracin ointment TID
  • For gram-negative organisms: 0.3% gentamicin drops every 2 hours
  • Use dark glasses
  • Systemic analgesics for pain
