DESCRIPTION
Presence of pus in a hollow organ or body cavity, particularly the pleural cavity. Usual course - acute.
CAUSES
  • purulent inflammatory exudate of pleural cavity
  • pulmonary infection
  • thoracic surgery
  • esophageal perforation
  • hematogenous spread from other sites
  • idiopathic
  • subphrenic abscess
